Us Plastic Waste Agreement
Estimated amount of discarded plastic from imported plastic waste and paper waste, which has not been sufficiently managed in importing countries. The authors of this study (T.R.S., J.R.J.) and investigative journalists (24, 25 years old) visited plastic waste treatment plants in a number of countries (e.g. Vietnam.B, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Jordan, South Africa and Belize) and observed and documented the open unloading and incineration of discarded plastics. However, there is no robust data on how widespread these practices are in and in countries that import scrap metal from the United States, which were taken into account in this study. That`s why we used a credible estimate of 25-75% of plastic discarded plastic and paper waste from the US, which was not sufficiently managed in the recipient country. Officials from 187 countries participating in UNEP negotiations are considering legally binding amendments to the Basel Convention on Waste, which would govern trade in discarded plastics. GENEVA (Reuters) – Countries are on the verge of reaching an agreement to tighten controls on trade in plastic waste, which would make it harder for the top U.S. exporter to supply unsorted plastic for disposal in emerging Asian economies, activists said on Tuesday. For comparison with the 2010 analysis and to inform of possible leaks into the ocean, we calculated the amount of poorly managed waste produced by the coastal population of the 50 countries that produced the largest amounts of plastic waste in 2016. For the United States, we have included estimates of the upper and lower limits of illegal dumping and insufficient management of exported debris, as described above. We included exports in the coastal calculation because most of this material was transported by ship to importing countries, where it was probably processed in the immediate vicinity of the coast on arrival and in order to minimize additional transport costs. According to our cap, the United States was the world`s third-largest polluter of poorly managed plastic waste in 2016 (Table 3), an increase of 82-400% over the 2010 estimate (0.28 Mt in 2010). Some animals have been used for plastic waste.
